Big Issue Invest launches Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion Measurement Tool

Big Issue Invest has designed a Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion Measurement Tool to support organisations to measure their diversity characteristics internally and within the different groups that use their services.

Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion are principles at the heart of the Big Issue Invest and Big Issue Group mission. As a social investor, it is important that we ensure our funds are accessible and inclusive of different communities and individual needs to ensure we build a world that works for everyone. By sharing this tool, we hope to encourage organisations to collect and share their own diversity data and use it within their own decision-making around DEI practices and policies. This is one way in which we are working towards our mission and striving towards equity in the social investment sector.

The Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion (“DEI”) measurement tool is freely available for any organisation to use and can be downloaded from the Big Issue Invest website here: BII DEI Measurement Tool.

The DEI tool has three primary functions that it aims to support organisations to measure. These are the following:

1) Measuring representation and diversity within an organisation’s leadership team, board and staff.

2) Measuring the diversity of an organisation’s users or clients.

3) Calculating an organisational gender and ethnicity pay gap.

The tool has the capacity to measure the representation of protected characteristics including gender, disability and health, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and age. It also includes additional categories, including measuring the lived experience[1] of staff and leadership within an organisation, and several categories of socio-economic disadvantage within users of a service e.g., eligibility for free school meals, and experience of homelessness. We would recommend these categories as a base level for data collection at an organisational and service user level.

The tool has been designed to support organisations that would like more guidance on how to measure their internal diversity characteristics. This tool can be used by organisations in the social purpose sector for a variety of benefits including setting internal targets for DEI, adapting services to meet the needs of different users, and reporting to funders or key stakeholders.

It can also be used to identify where there may be any power imbalances in decision-making, where representation lies for key groups or communities an organisation is seeking to serve, and it may indicate whether any barriers exist for certain groups in accessing services.
