John Bird was born into poverty, brought up in care, and has lived through a lot. His life’s journey has included spells as a thief, prison inmate, artist and poet. Now an established writer, political and social activist, published author and advisor to governments on dismantling poverty John Bird is the force behind The Big Issue, the world’s most successful street magazine. He is an inspirational business leader with an outstanding record of using business as a tool for social change.
Nigel is a leading social entrepreneur and advocate of social enterprise and social finance. Since 1974, he has had first-hand experience of starting, building and running social enterprises. He joined The Big Issue in 1994 becoming its Managing Director and then the Chair of The Big Issue Group and in 2005 the first CEO of Big Issue Invest. Previously, Nigel founded three printing and publishing social enterprises and has also worked as a project manager, systems analyst, litho printer and trade union official. Nigel trained as a lithographic printer and gained his Diploma in Printing Production with Distinction at the London College of Printing where he later became Chair of the Board of Governors. In 2008, he was the winner of the Institute of Directors’ Good Enterprise Award and in 2013, Social Enterprise UK’s ‘Champion of Champions’. In 2010, Nigel was awarded an OBE for services to Social Enterprise.

Parveen started her career in advertising sales for magazine. Since then she has worked as an Assistant Producer of various regional BBC and ITV stations before becoming a reporter and producer for GMTV. Since 2010 Parveen has been an Executive Director of The Big Issue Group Ltd.
