Set up in 2005 as the social investment arm of The Big Issue, the UK’s most trusted social brand, BII exists to further The Big Issue’s activities and reach. Core to our ultimate aims are to actively empower the marginalised, through employment and entrepreneurship; to help people, to help themselves. We believe in a hand up, not a hand out.
Big Issue Invest is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Big Issue, a company limited by guarantee, with an independent Board, combining a strong mix of social enterprise, business and finance experience.
We have an experienced Credit Committee and Investment Advisory Committee to support our decision-making with majority independent members. These committee members bring substantial private equity, lending and business experience to BII’s operations and provide thoughtful input and advice.
Launched in 1991, The Big Issue is the world’s most widely circulated street newspaper and one of the most celebrated social businesses in existence. As a social enterprise ourselves, we pay any dividends generated by our investments up to our parent company and award winning social business, The Big Issue, also a social enterprise with a charitable arm, The Big Issue Foundation.
